Let’s crack open this week’s brain snack. 🧠
red alert 🔴
Color does so much more than paint our worlds pretty. It talks to our nervous systems. It changes how fast our hearts beat, how safe we feel, and even how well we score on a test.
And red? Red doesn’t mess around.
🧑🔬 In a set of experiments from the early 2000s, psychologists discovered something pretty wild. Just seeing the color red before a test or challenge (like on a name tag, in a classroom, or on a page) could lead to lower performance.
Researchers discovered that red, often associated with danger, mistakes, and warnings, activates what’s known as avoidance motivation. In other words, your brain sees red and subconsciously goes: “Yikes. Better not mess this up!” Which, ironically, makes you more likely to… mess it up.
The official color of fire engines and Hollywood carpets tends to increase physiological arousal (think: faster heartbeat, higher tension). While that might be great for sports or sales, it’s not ideal when you’re solving math problems or making decisions under pressure. 😫
In academic or analytical tasks, even subtle red cues can prime your brain to expect failure or critique. A recipe for lower confidence and reduced focus.
OK, now that you know red can mess with your head, how do you apply that in real life? Try this 👇:
Prepping for a test, pitch, or performance? Avoid red backgrounds or slides in your deck. Go blue or green instead (they promote calm and focus).
Designing anything with action steps? Use red sparingly and only for real urgency. If everything's red, nothing is.
Need to boost attention, not performance? Red can be great for warning signs, alerts, or drawing the eye but timing matters.
Closing argument? Red gets your attention, but not always in a good way. Color is a language, so make sure it’s saying what you want it to say.
PS - if you paint the town red this weekend, we want in. 💃
