Welcome to another fresh edition of Sugar Cereal! 🥣

New here? We’re a weekly newsletter unpacking all things human behavior.

Every Friday, you’ll get one fun fact to distract you from the void…and some life hacks to help you function in it.🤪

OK, time to unwrap this week’s brain candy.

magic in the mishaps 💫

In the words of Bob Ross, “we don’t make mistakes, we make happy accidents.” Could an innocent slip here and there make you more charming? Survey says…yes!

When smart people make small mistakes, it draws others in. Put that in your imposter syndrome pipe and smoke it.

In 1966, psychologist Elliot Aronson discovered what’s known as the Pratfall Effect. He found that when someone who’s perceived as highly competent spills coffee on themselves or flubs an answer, they actually become more likable.

The mistake makes them feel more human. Relatable. Safe.

Meanwhile, if someone who’s not seen as competent makes the same blunder? Their ratings drop. So what’s going on here? 🤔

We’re wired to admire skill, but we bond over imperfection. A little stumble from someone "impressive" sends a signal: this person is good at what they do and they're still a person.

Call it social magic.

But here's the catch: this only works if you're already seen as competent.

So…maybe build the resume before tripping over the printer cable and spilling your pumpkin spice latte (‘tis almost the season).🎃

Wanna take the Pratfall Effect for a test drive? Try these hacks:

  • Telling a story on stage or in a pitch? Don’t be afraid to include a small personal flub or awkward detail.

  • Trying to connect in a bio or post? Add one unexpected or vulnerable moment.

  • Leading a team? Admitting a minor miss might help you bond faster than bragging about a win.

Moral of this week’s story?

In a world obsessed with perfection, maybe the bravest thing we can do is just be real.
